Suzanne SeguinBio: Hello my name is Suzanne Séguin. I’m a mother, a wife, a grandmother, a local business owner operating Lighthouse Press, a dedicated volunteer. I am asking for your support to become Cobourg's next Deputy Mayor. Since my appointment to Cobourg Council on January 2017, I have talked to many people here in Cobourg and I have listened! It is my job as a member of Council to work for you and bring your concerns to the Council table. My attendance record and voting record proves that I have been there for you as a Councillor, and will continue to do so as your Deputy Mayor for the next four years. My experience in municipal government as the former Mayor of Prescott and current Councillor here in Cobourg, will benefit you as a taxpayer so that your money is spent wisely to make Cobourg a better place to live, work, play, invest and retire! I serve as a Town Councillor because I believe in an open, transparent and a sustainable Cobourg.

I currently sit on the following municipal advisory committees as a board member: Downtown Business Improvement Area (DBIA); Cobourg Public Library; Art Gallery of Northumberland; Liaison to the Cobourg Farmers’ Market; Armistice18 Committee; and Master Cultural Plan Steering Committee.

Suzanne's Vision for 2018 – 2022

  • Attract new businesses and residents to our Downtown and fill empty stores.
  • Launch an Open for Business Resource to support Cobourg small businesses.
  • Recommend strategies for attracting more millennials and young families to stay in Cobourg and work here.
  • Support Seniors’ Programs and Activities
  • Encourage arts and culture in Cobourg.

Bio:
Born and raised in Cobourg.  Graduated from Cobourg West Collegiate high school.
Active volunteer with many organizations such as the local Blood Donor Clinic, Cobourg Legion Poppy Drive. Has held a variety of leadership roles with the Cobourg Alliance Church and long time Youth leader and mentor. Past member of Cobourg Legion executive committee - Public Relations Officer

Professional leadership experience:
Long time manager of six Tim Horton's Franchises in Cobourg and Port Hope and most recently served with long-time M.P.P. Lou Rinaldi as Executive Assistant (legislative) at Queens Park since 2014

Campaign statement:
I believe Cobourg to be a vibrant, growing community with opportunities for young people and families to grow and prosper, for retired folks to kick back and relax, for tourists to come and enjoy the regular events and attractions and the incredible beauty and historical charm of the area and for businesses and industry to set up and thrive.
I want to bring the skills I have learned in my professional life to the role of Cobourg Councillor. I think the Council needs some new voices and new perspectives to the issues we face as a community and I want to be a part of that critical process as we move forward.

Key priorities:

  • Openness and accountability - I commit to bring the voice of the the citizens of Cobourg to town hall on all issues.   It’s important to regularly engage and listen to the ideas and concerns of the people. This includes public “town hall” style meet and greets being established throughout the community on a regular basis.  (Northumberland mall, CCC, Library etc.)
  • Lack of rent geared to income housing for seniors - if elected, I would commit to working with community, provincial, federal partners and developers to do whatever I can to aid in the development and construction of more rent geared to income housing for seniors.
  • Taxation - Having a fair and balanced approach and ensuring that we have an open and transparent budget consultation process, is essential to making sure our tax dollars are being used appropriately and wisely.

BIO: Karl was born and raised in Cobourg and defines himself as a straight-shooter. Honesty, due-diligence, transparency, integrity and stewardship are virtues he lives by - a stickler for doing what's right and seeking accountability. Karl has a BScH under his belt and seeks a pragmatic approach to politics; albeit in a gentle and approachable manner. Karl operates a local website design and marketing company as well as freelances IT work for an international conglomerate. He also has valuable volunteer experience through not-for-profit corporations.

Campaign Statement:

After researching a wide variety of local resources and viewing all of the council meetings over the last two years, I have identified four key areas I would like to concentrate my efforts on (shall I be elected). These would be:

  1. Infrastructure: Maintain and improve our town's infrastructure.
  2. Affordable Housing: Brainstorm and attempt to implement affordable housing investment incentives to developers.
  3. Aging & Accessibility: Find ways to attract investment in long-term care facilities and increase accessibility in Cobourg.
  4. Finances: Fiscal responsibility and a close watch on expenditures. Look for savings to bring the best value to Cobourg's tax payers.

This is not a complete list of priorities, rather a focus. I also intend to fully cooperate and support many of the wonderful organizations around Cobourg that help to make it a great place to live, such as the DBIA, CTA, Rotary & Lion's Club, Knights of Columbus etc.

  • Responsible Tourism: We can make Cobourg an even better place to live and visit by ensuring that local businesses and residents benefit from tourism.
