The two Home Hardware stores in Cobourg are closing and will be replaced with a new one that rivals Home Depot in size.   Both stores along with Gilmer’s Home Hardware in Port Hope and another in Newcastle have the same owners.  The consolidation in Cobourg will result in a new store with a large drive though lumber department and store space much larger than the previous stores.  The existing Division Street store closed Christmas Eve and the William Street store will close New Year’s Eve.

home hardware Dec29 2015Home Hardware 650 Division Street. On Dec 29, 2015The new store will be open starting Saturday January 2.  Listed hours are:

Saturday - 7:30am to 6:00pm
Sunday - 10:00am to 5:00pm
Weekdays - 7:30am to 8:00pm
(or maybe a 7:00am open – to be confirmed).

The lumber department is large with a large outdoor inventory plus a drive through with access to popular lumber under cover.

Although the new store is not yet open, for the last week or so the parking lot has been close to full with cars and trucks belonging to people helping stock the shelves.

Access is off Division Street directly or via a Kerr Street stub which has been constructed along the north edge of the property.  The safest entry seems to be the Kerr street entrance – in fact that’s the only entrance for vehicles southbound on Division Street.  There are lights just a short distance north at Ewart Street so a second set at Kerr Street won’t be happening – at least for a while.  The site plan was presented to Council August 11, 2014 – details here.
